A man and his dog were rescued from a Fresno canal on Tuesday.
Fresno Fire Department spokesperson Josh Sellers said a call came in around 2 p.m. regarding a victim in a canal. With the help of a helicopter, responding firefighters found the man clinging to the edge of a canal.
The man had been swept downstream after jumping in to rescue his dog. He was clutching the animal.
After gaining access to the canal, firefighters used a ground ladder to reach the victim and get them to safety.
The man was treated at a hospital. The dog was uninjured.
“Fast-moving water, steep concrete walls, and strong currents can quickly into a life-threatening emergency. Please stay out of canals, keep pets on a leash near waterways, and use extreme caution whenever you are around them,” Sellers said.
