A person was injured Wednesday morning when a San Diego police officer fired one round into a suspected stolen vehicle in San Ysidro, authorities said.
The person was transported to a hospital. No information about his or her condition was immediately released.
The shooting occurred during a “hot stop” on a suspected stolen vehicle shortly before 7:05 a.m. on Del Sur Boulevard near Beyer Boulevard. Police had approached the vehicle with guns drawn when the officer fired a shot, said police spokesperson Officer Colin Steinbroner.
He said more than one person was inside the vehicle at the time.
“They were trying to get the suspects to come out of the vehicle” when the shooting occurred, he said.
Sheriff’s homicide detectives have responded to the scene and will be investigating the shooting. Under a countywide memorandum, law enforcement agencies don’t investigate their own agency’s shootings.
In a post on X, San Diego police told drivers to avoid Del Sur Boulevard between Caithness Drive and Beyer Boulevard for the next several hours while the investigation is underway.
