The Oakland Roots are at risk of not being able to play Saturday’s match at the Coliseum after falling behind on rent payments to Alameda County and the city of Oakland.
The authority that governs the Coliseum notified the team that it is in default on $1.381 million in past-due payments.
The Roots presented a payment plan last Friday, but the board determined it was not acceptable.
The board said the team must either pay the full amount owed or pay $173,000 per game, which includes a flat fee, a food and beverage deposit, facilities fees and parking. The team must also pay an additional $200,000 over the next six games toward the past-due balance.
That per-game payment is due by noon Wednesday if the Roots want to play Saturday’s match at the Coliseum.
The team has struggled with low attendance and has been operating at a loss.
NBC Bay Area reached out to the Roots and the city of Oakland for comment but had not received a response Wednesday morning. The office of Alameda County Supervisor David Haubert responded but said he would not be available to comment until noon.
