SEAL BEACH, Calif. — Seal Beach resident Stephanie Potter, who is 72 years old, was injured by a teen in an e-bike crash. Following her e-bike crash, she spent two weeks in the ICU with a broken leg, hand, nose and jaw.
“I was knocked out, my face went to the concrete so I have no awareness at all,” said Potter.
Truveta, an organization that collects emergency health-related data, identified more than 12,000 emergency department visits involving e-bike and e-scooter injuries nationally between 2023 and 2026.
Earlier this year, District Attorney Todd Spitzer launched a new prosecution unit called RIDE SAFELY. The goal is to create accountability for kids and adults who ride e-bikes and e-motorcycles, but according to Elisa Kim with the DA office, it also goes after those who break the law while riding them.
“The Orange County District Attorney’s office has realized that this is not just a juvenile problem — it is definitely a parent problem,” said Kim.
The DA’s office currently has four open cases against parents and is considering filing charges against 26 other parents.
