María Moreno, director of recreation and community service for the city of Baldwin Park, was honored with the “Mexican Pride of the Month” award from the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles on Thursday.
In a ceremony at the Consulate General of Mexico’s office in Los Angeles, city officials heaped praise on Moreno, who has worked for the city for more than three decades. The award, according to the Consulate General, celebrates “outstanding Mexican immigrants whose achievements, leadership, and contributions serve as an inspiration to the Mexican community abroad.”
Ambassador Carlos González Gutiérrez, Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles, presented Moreno with the honor and lauded her years of service in the community.
Moreno was selected for her efforts to launch initiatives that “expand access to community programs, public services, and opportunities, particularly to immigrant families facing times of uncertainty and challenge.”
Councilmembers Manuel Lozano, Emmanuel Estrada and Jean Ayala were on hand to congratulate Moreno, who came to the United States at age 5 from Michoacán, Mexico.
As part of this monthly tradition, Moreno was presented a commemorative lithograph created by artist Abby Aceves by Gutiérrez.
