OAKLAND — A local man has been charged with child abuse after his son apparently ingested a chocolate bar that was loaded with hallucinogenic mushrooms, according to court records.
The 36-year-old Oakland resident called 911 on July 17 to report that his 5-year-old son appeared to be tripping on mushrooms, authorities said. The boy was treated at a hospital and released. Police say the boy appeared to have eaten one square from the candy bar.
The man told police he kept his psilocybin chocolate in a cupboard and that the boy would have had to have used a stepping stool to access it. He said he wasn’t sure when the boy consumed the bar, which he bought at a local smoke shop, authorities said.
The man was released from jail at a July 22 court appearance. He has been charged with felony child abuse. As part of a condition of his release, a judge ordered him to take 12 parenting classes, records show.
