I-5 closed in downtown Sacramento due to law enforcement activity

Jeremiah MartinezSACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Both directions of Interstate 5 in downtown Sacramento are closed due to law enforcement activity, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP said Northbound I-5 at State Route 50 and Southbound I-5 at Richards Boulevard are shut down for an unknown duration of time as officers respond to a mental health emergency. CHP added westbound and eastbound Highway 50 ramps to Northbound I-5 will be shut down.

Caltrans cameras show traffic at a standstill.

CHP advises motorists to stay out of the area and take alternate routes. Alternate routes are on State Route 99 and Interstate 80.

All southbound traffic is being taken off at Richards Boulevard and Northbound traffic is being diverted at Highway 50.

Sacramento Police crisis negotiators are enroute to the scene.
