The Detroit Institute of Arts announced the completion of its 2026 Partners in Public Art community mural project in Waterford Township.
The mural, located in Hess-Hathaway Park, 825 S. Williams Lake Road, was created by Johnny Fletcher.
The township will celebrate the mural on Aug 22.
“We are delighted to partner with Waterford Township for our 2026 Partners in Public Art program,” said Julie McFarland, executive director of DIA’s public affairs and community engagement. “The mural celebrates the unique character and spirit of the community, and we are proud to help bring a new public artwork to Waterford Township.”
“The Hess-Hathaway Park mural honors the rich agricultural history of the property while celebrating the life and spirit that continues to define it today,” said Fletcher. “Featuring Champagne the horse alongside scenes of the working farm, the artwork bridges generations, connecting the memories of the past with the living landscape of the present. Through vibrant imagery of fields, animals, and rural life, the mural reflects the enduring relationship between community, land, and heritage.”
“Inspired by the park’s natural beauty, rich history, and beloved farm animals, the mural celebrates the charm and wonder that generations of residents and visitors have come to love. We extend our sincere appreciation to the DIA, artist Johnny Fletcher, and everyone who helped bring this lasting tribute to life.” said Alison Swanson, the township’s parks and recreation director.
The Partners in Public Art program is made possible with support from the Tri-County millage.
