Oakland police responded to a shooting Friday morning at an educational facility in East Oakland.
Initial reports show one person died and another person was injured in the shooting, which happened on the 7900 block of Ney Avenue, authorities said. One person was taken into custody following the shooting, authorities said. Details about that person were not immediately available.
Numerous circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unclear Friday morning.
Multiple people living nearby said they heard about a dozen shots — perhaps more — ring out sometime after 9 a.m. on Friday morning. One woman, Heidi Kelly-Tuason, initially dismissed the noise as fireworks, until she heard sirens converging on the Oakland Adult & Career Education center.
Shortly afterward, she saw several officers rushing into a building on the center’s campus with their guns drawn. An ambulance was later seen rushing away from the scene.
John Sasaki, a spokesperson for the Oakland Unified School District, did not immediately respond to a request for comment, except that “this has changed the day for operations” on the campus.
