FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — The Fresno Chaffee Zoo announced the birth of a new Malayan tapir.

The zoo announced that Ulan gave birth to a male calf on July 11th.

“This is the first Malayan tapir calf that has been born at Fresno Chaffee Zoo, so this is a very special birth for our community,” said Nicole Presley, Fresno Chaffee Zoo’s general curator. “Ulan and her calf are taking this time to rest and bond behind-the-scenes. They are doing well and will continue to be monitored by the Zoo’s Animal Care and Veterinary teams.”

The calf is Ulan’s second, but the first born with William, a male Malayan tapir at Fresno Chaffee Zoo.

The zoo said it is celebrating the birth as a milestone for Fresno and as part of its support for Malayan tapir conservation.

According to the IUCN Red List, Malayan tapirs are considered endangered in their natural habitat.

Fresno Chaffee Zoo is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, which promotes sustainable harvesting of palm oil to protect the natural habitats of many Southeast Asian species, including Malayan tapirs.

The zoo is inviting the public to help name the calf by picking one of three names: Winston, Ube, and Winchester.
