SACRAMENTO, Calif. — An officer-involved shooting of a robbery suspect in the La Riviera area is under investigation, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

In an update from Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Edward Igoe, it all started around 9 a.m. near the 9000 block of Folsom Boulevard when law enforcement got a call from a construction worker saying someone broke into his vehicle.

“He was holding the victim’s wallet and the victim’s cell phone,” Sgt. Igoe said. “The victim at that point tried to get his items back, and the suspect pulled a knife on him.”
The suspect then fled the area.
When deputies responded to that scene, they were able to go through some property law enforcement said the suspect left behind. That’s when they were able to identify the suspect.
Then around 10: 20 a.m., another call came in to the sheriff’s office communications center reporting a burglary in progress near the 2600 block of Mackinaw Way.
“That caller came home to find an individual had broken into his home,” Sgt. Igoe said. “Not only that, but that suspect had the homeowner’s handgun in his hand.”
Sgt. Igoe added the suspect pointed the firearm at the homeowner several times, threatening his life.
“As he continued to steal items from the homeowner, fortunately the homeowner was able to run from the scene and get assistance calling 911.”
Deputies responded to the scene going down Grayling Way and, with the help of neighbors in the area and a description from the homeowner, were able to find the suspect on a stolen bike and tried to stop him.
It was at that time they noticed that he had the stolen handgun still in his hand.
Law enforcement followed the suspect all the way to the end of a cul-de-sac where there was a gate. That’s where Sgt. Igoe said the suspect ditched the bike and squeezed through the gate into a parking lot of a large shopping center. Deputies followed him.
“He ended up going all the way to the fence line where he stopped, turned around and faced them, holding the gun down by his side,” Sgt. Igoe said. “Our deputies tried to get him to drop the firearm several times. He refused. A lot of yelling ensued.”
Sgt. Igoe then said the suspect raised the firearm toward the deputies, which initiated an officer-involved shooting.
The suspect was hit. Deputies detained him and provided medical aid. He was then taken to a local area hospital, where he is said to be alive, but his injuries are unknown at this time.
No deputies were injured.
