A 0.7-mile stretch of Shaw Avenue is getting a $1.6 million makeover this fall.
The Fresno City Council approved a construction contract Thursday for the city’s primary east-west commercial thoroughfare from Fruit Avenue to approximately 950 feet east of Palm Avenue.
The project will repave Shaw Avenue in both directions, “creating a smoother, safer ride for thousands of motorists who travel the corridor each day,” the city said in a press release Friday.
Additional improvements include new curb ramps, updated roadway signage and fresh striping.
“Shaw Avenue is one of Fresno’s busiest corridors, and people have been waiting to see this stretch get repaved,” Mayor Jerry Dyer said. “Today is an important milestone because the wait is over, we’re turning those plans into action. The steps we take today will serve this community for years to come.”
Construction is expected to begin this fall and be completed before Thanksgiving.
The construction contract was approved with Cal Valley Construction, Inc. to the amount of $1,636,501.
The project is funded through the federal Surface Transportation Block Grant program, with the required local match provided through California’s SB-1 Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Account, according to the city.
