FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — More than 1,000 volunteers fanned out across Fresno on the city’s sixth Citywide Community CleanUP Day, hauling away thousands of pounds of trash in a two-hour push aimed at making neighborhoods, parks and riverfront areas cleaner.

Mayor Jerry Dyer joined 1,026 volunteers who took part in 65 group and individual cleanup projects across the city as his Beautify Fresno initiative marked the sixth annual event.

Organizers said 12,330 pounds of trash and litter were removed from streets, parks and riverfronts within two hours, covering almost every area of Fresno.

Volunteers worked at four hub locations in Downtown, Central, Southeast and West Fresno, while other residents were encouraged to pick an area important to them and clean it on their own.

Those independent efforts ranged from individuals to groups as large as 100 people.

Beautify Fresno provided cleanup materials for the event, and volunteers were allowed to keep the supplies for future use.

Beautify Fresno, one of Dyer’s top priorities, aims to inspire residents to take pride in the city and encourage community action to make Fresno “a cleaner, greener, more beautiful place to live.”

“This event is just one more example of the good work Beautify Fresno and its volunteers are producing each and every week,” Dyer said. “We’re proud to lead California with a positive movement that continues to make a significant difference in our community.”

Caltrans also held a separate cleanup project, reporting a record number of employees working along State Route 41 to pick up trash.

Other groups that hosted their own cleanup locations included Wells Fargo, Mid Valley Recycling, Pyle Elementary School, IBEW, and several Girl Scout and Cub Scout troops.

After cleanup projects wrapped up, participants were invited to an outdoor thank-you after-party in the Manchester Center parking lot from 10 a.m. to noon, featuring food from local food trucks, music, and kids’ activities.
