SAN DIEGO (FOX5/KUSI) — It’s hot and we are seeing elevated surf at our local beaches.
“It’s been amazing. We’re getting the best run of swell. We’ve probably had in years for summer usually it’s pretty small,” said Matthew Allen.
Beach hazards remain through Saturday as hurricane swells impact San Diego coast
The elevated surf conditions were triggered by Hurricane Genevieve.
Waves in San Diego County have been forecasted at 3 to 5 feet.
It’s a recipe for more water rescues.
Matthew Allen runs Maui Surf Academy so he knows the risk the water poses.
“If you don’t know, don’t go,” he said.
Encinitas Fire and Marine Safety Department reports 1,021 rescues since July 1, with 432 happening within the past week.
Encinitas lifeguards tell me they adjust their staffing for heat moreso than the swell.
But they say the past two weeks have been some of the busiest days they’ve seen.
Lifeguards said the most common area for rescues are between stone steps beach and swamis.
Allen encourages people to talk to their local lifeguard.
“They have a board kind of telling you what to do where to be and what not to do you can talk to them ask if there’s any ribs ask what the waves are like in the surf report that kind of thing,” he said.
We should start to see surf let up tomorrow night with the high aurf advisory expiring.
