It’s peak festival season. Here are some fun events coming up this weekend in the Bay Area and beyond:

Spirit of ’45, Living History Day, San Jose (Aug. 1): San Jose will relive the heady days of 1945 with History San Jose’s annual Living History Day during the day, followed by a Swing Dance at night.

Exhibits and activities starting at 2 p.m. will include a WWII tent city, vintage cars, fashion show, trolley rides and 1940s-era children’s games. The day will culminate in patriotic enactments of President Truman’s “cessation of hostilities” announcement, the famous Times Square kiss, plus a homecoming victory parade.

From 7-10 p.m., a USO-style Swing Dance will feature the 19-piece Swing Solutions big band and dancers in vintage attire.

Watsonville Strawberry Festival (Aug. 1-2): With its abundance of strawberry fields, Watsonville has been nicknamed “The Strawberry Capital of the World.” To celebrate this status, the city hosts an annual summer festival that’s more than a sampling of strawberry recipes. It’s a full-on party with live music, vendors, pie-eating competition, costume contest, fun run and more.

“Per usual, people can get anything from strawberry tacos to strawberry pizza and a myriad of strawberry desserts and strawberry beer,” Recreation Supervisor Jessica Beebe said. In addition, arts and crafts vendors will sell strawberry-themed clothing and other items.

Fremont Festival of the Arts (Aug. 1-2): One of the Bay Area’s largest art and wine festivals, this 42nd annual event will feature more than 200 artists and artisans from around the country. Over the two days, about 150,000 attendees are expected to converge on the BART-convenient festival streets in the core downtown Fremont area.

Two stages will offer nonstop live music. Dozens of food booths will be scattered around the festival streets, and wine, beer and cocktail pours will be available for $10 each.

Hot Wheels Legends Tour, Union City (Aug. 1): For the first time since 2019, the Hot Wheels tour is making a stop in the Bay Area, with 100 car designers gathering for a chance to become the next custom build to be “immortalized as a Hot Wheels die-cast car,” organizers say. One winner here will move on to the national semifinals.

Besides the competition, the event will feature interactive play areas, collector die-cast vehicles and up-close looks at life-size cars from the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends.

Moose Lodge Rib Cookoff, Castro Valley (Aug. 1): For the third year, the Hayward/Castro Valley Moose Lodge Rib Cookoff featuring Bay Area pitmasters will give barbecue-loving attendees a chance to taste ribs and chicken wings — and vote for the People’s Choice favorites.

The event will open at 11 a.m. with DJ music, vendors, concessions and samples. Tasting begins at 1 p.m., and the awards ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m.
