Sacramento residents turn to the American River to escape the heat
As temperatures hit 102 degrees in Sacramento, locals are finding relief from the heat by cooling off in the American River.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
With temperatures soaring to 102 degrees in Sacramento, residents are heading to the American River to cool off and enjoy the summer weather.
“It feels cold in the water and the weather is 100 degrees,” one little girl said.
Eleven-year-old Emilee Morales shared her thoughts on the heat, saying, “It’s very hot. If you want to stay inside, it could be cool in the AC.”
While air conditioning isn’t an option at Discovery Park, staying hydrated is another way to beat the heat. “Drinking water,” one person suggested.
Whether in the water, on the shore, or nearby, staying cool is a priority for everyone. Some children pointed out the risks of overheating. “You could get so hot that you could pass out,” one said. Another added, “[So] you don’t get sunburned or too red.”
One young girl reflected on the changing temperatures, saying, “Right now it’s a very cool temperature, but it will probably get hotter later on. But that’s the only reason we came out here because it’s been getting hot. We came out here yesterday too.”
Victoria Gallegos, who was cooling off in the American River, shared her perspective on summer activities. “We’re by water, so, you know, you got to stay cool. Summertime’s for water games and wintertime’s for snow games,” she said.
Gallegos and her friends were also enjoying card games like Uno by the river. “We’ll play a couple rounds; I’ll beat them really quick and then we’ll have to go cool off. You know,” she said.
Juan Diego Farias described his experience in the water, saying, “It feels fresh once you’re in there. You know, it feels colder trying to get out.”
Reflecting on the season, Gallegos added, “It’s summertime, it’s supposed to be hot.”
