Family and friends released balloons in their memory.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Family and friends gathered at Northgate Park on Sunday to remember two teenagers killed while riding their bicycles in West Sacramento one year earlier.
Jaea Chatman and Layla Clemons, both 17, were remembered during a vigil in Natomas marking the anniversary of their deaths.
As part of the vigil, those in attendance released dozens of balloons into the air while standing in the shape of a heart.
Friends and family said they are committed to making sure Jaea and Layla’s memories carry on.
“It takes me back to the night that it happened, and that’s rough. But we’re trying to not think about that,” Stephanie Vallejos, Layla Clemons’ grandmother, said.
The man accused of driving the car that hit and killed both girls faces eight charges connected to their deaths, including murder. David Alison Walker, 71 and of Fair Oaks, allegedly drank alcohol before getting into his car that night.
“We’re trying to think about the good things and all the positive that we had with [Clemons]. She was such a bubbly person, she was such a fun person,” Vallejos said.
