The Padres and Diamondbacks both needed pitching.
The Padres added two starters without subtracting from the big-league roster. The Diamondbacks added none.
So one team clearly won the deadline — although Arizona outbid San Diego for Lars Nootbaar — but that didn’t matter much on Monday.
Brandon Pfaadt out-dueled Michael King, the Phillies also won and the Padres dropped two games behind both Arizona and Philadelphia in the race for the NL’s final two wild-card spots.
The setback also shaved the Padres’ playoff odds at Fangraphs.com from 29% to 23.3%.
The final stretch is only just beginning, but the Padres need to reverse course in the desert quickly this week.
