The first reinforcements have joined the Padres at Chase Field.

Both right-hander Casey Mize and infielder Gage Workman were added to the active roster ahead of the Padres’ 6:40 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday. To make room, left-hander JP Sears and catcher Rodolfo Durán were optioned to Triple-A El Paso.

Mize will likely start Wednesday.

Left-hander Robbie Ray should join the team later tonight.

Workman is not in the Padres’ lineup on Tuesday.

The left-handed-hitting Workman has big-league time at third base (19 games), shortstop (3) and second base (2). He’s a .167/.182/.352 hitter with two homers across 55 plate appearances in the majors. Both home runs were hit this year (.158/.158/.395).

Workman hit as many as 18 homers in a minor league season in 2024 at Double-A Erie (.843 OPS) and was a .253/.332/.449 hitter across parts of six seasons in the minors.

Durán was hitting .146/.222/.305 with three homers in 91 plate appearances. He’d been used sparingly while on the roster as a third catcher.

Sears was 3-4 with a 4.68 ERA in 32⅔ innings. The Padres will have to make another roster move when they activate Ray.

Monday’s loss dropped the Padres (58-55) two games out of the race for the second and third wild-card spot, currently occupied by the Diamondbacks and Phillies.

Tuesday’s pitching matchup

Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (6-6, 4.45 ERA)

He last pitched in this spot in the rotation on Thursday as a bulk reliever, but he’ll get the start today as the Padres work out adding their two new starters to the rotation. Vásquez is coming off 4 ⅔ shutout innings of work in relief and has a 2.45 ERA in 11 innings (four appearances) since returning from the injured list. He has a 3.71 ERA in 26 ⅔ innings (6 games, 4 starts) in his career against the Diamondbacks.

Here is how Vásquez has fared against current D-backs:

D-backs LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (10-3, 2.48 ERA)

He’s allowed two earned runs or less in all but five of his 22 starts. Rodriguez has a 3.74 ERA in four career starts against the Padres, but has not faced them since allowing nine runs in 10 innings across two losses last year.
