BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A man suspected in a domestic dispute was arrested after allegedly intentionally ramming into another car, leading CHP on a pursuit along Highway 99, and assaulting a K9 during his arrest. The pursuit ended after he tried to avoid a spike strip, lost control of his vehicle and rolled over.
The California Highway Patrol said on August 3, 2026, shortly after 4 p.m., officers monitored radio traffic regarding a man described as Hispanic and in his late 20s driving a Nissan Rogue who was involved in a domestic dispute and reckless driving.
CHP said officers positioned themselves to intercept and stop the suspect vehicle near southbound Highway 99 and Avenue 184 in Tulare County.
According to CHP, after finding the vehicle, the suspect purposefully rammed a Toyota Corolla, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit. As the pursuit proceeded southbound on Highway 99 near Merced Avenue, officers from the Bakersfield CHP office and a K9 unit took over the pursuit.
In the area of 7th Standard Road, officers deployed a spike strip. The suspect tried to avoid the spike strip, lost control of the vehicle, and overturned, with the vehicle coming to rest on its wheels, according to CHP.
Officers on scene gave numerous verbal commands and canine announcements to the driver as he remained in the vehicle. The driver failed to comply, and CHP K9 “Oso” was deployed.
During the apprehension, the suspect actively assaulted K9 Oso.
CHP said officers converged and extracted the suspect from the vehicle, taking him into custody without further incident.
The suspect was medically cleared at a hospital and booked at the Tulare County Pre-trial facility for various felony charges.
There were no injuries to CHP officers or K9 Oso.
CHP said the occupants of the Toyota Corolla sustained minor injuries.
