Re “Leaders clash over park restrooms” (July 28): Like many San Diegans, I was frustrated to read that 13 Mission Bay restrooms remain closed in the middle of summer.
The elected officials who approved this budget all share responsibility for the outcome.
To his credit, Councilmember Raul Campillo has publicly acknowledged that the decision should be reconsidered. He identified available funding that could be used to reopen the restrooms and urged Mayor Todd Gloria to do so. The mayor declined, and the rest of the City Council has remained silent.
Why is admitting a mistake and trying to fix it so difficult? If San Diegans have made it clear these restrooms should be reopened, why is Campillo the only elected official publicly working toward a solution?
We should encourage and reward public officials who are willing to listen to their constituents, acknowledge when a policy isn’t working and take meaningful steps to correct it. That’s the kind of leadership San Diego deserves.

Re “Mission Bay bathroom closures provoke disbelief, harsh criticism” (July 30): Do city leaders even consider how many men of a certain age, with their enlarged prostates, they have banned from the beach? If there’s a complete brain amongst the lot of them, they are keeping it well hidden.
