A person threatening to jump from a Hillcrest overpass onto state Route 163 temporarily caused a full shutdown of the freeway before officers safely talked him down on Wednesday.

Police received a report around 4:25 p.m. that a person was threatening to jump at 9th Street and University Avenue, said San Diego police Officer Abbey Langley.

About 20 minutes later, officers at the scene closed down both the northbound and southbound sides of SR-163, as well as University Avenue between 9th and 10th avenues.

Around 5:45 p.m., police said that the incident had been safely resolved and all roadways were reopening.

“Traffic will be returning to normal flow shortly,” officers said in a statement posted on X. “Thank you for your patience and understanding while officers worked the incident.”
