SURF CITY, N.C. (WECT) – A Surf City beach access is open once again after a nearly month-long closure triggered by a flea infestation.
Beach Access 25 reopened Thursday, Aug. 6, following a 24-day shutdown, according to town officials.
A spokesperson for the town said pesticide treatments targeting the fleas were successful and the area is now safe for beachgoers.
The town first received a report of a potential flea problem on Tuesday, July 14. Municipal staff inspected the access, confirmed the presence of fleas and immediately closed the area to begin chemical treatments.
Officials noted the infestation involved fleas typically found on domestic pets, such as dogs and cats.
The town added that it does not know how the fleas originally got to the beach access.
