Man accused of setting fire inside Sacramento grocery store, trying to ignite another nearby
SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
A man is in custody Friday after being accused of setting fire inside a Sacramento grocery store and a nearby tree in the store’s parking lot, officials said.
Crews were called to the La Superior Mercados along Stockton Boulevard and 22nd Avenue just after 4 a.m., the Sacramento Fire Department said.
Inside the store, burnt spices along one of the aisles, broken glass from forced entry and water on the floor from activated sprinklers could be seen. The fire department said its arson investigators reviewed surveillance footage and saw a person set a fire inside the store.
While crews were dealing with that fire in the store, the fire department said the same person caught on camera was trying to set an empty Pepsi box that holds 12 soda cans on fire. That box was wedged in a tree in the same parking lot where the store is.
The person taken into custody has not been identified. It is also not known how much the store is facing in damages.
