Deputies immediately began providing medical aid before he was taken to a local hospital, where law enforcement said he survived his injuries.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office has released video of an officer-involved shooting on Feb. 16, 2026.

Law enforcement says a suspect, identified as 45-year-old Tywain Smith, was shot and taken to a hospital during a traffic stop.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were on patrol when they spotted a vehicle suspected to have been involved in a shooting the day prior near Elk Grove Floring Road and Tiogawoods Drive.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop around 7:30 p.m. During the stop, two deputies fired their weapons, hitting Smith.

Before the shooting, one deputy can be heard in the video saying he saw a gun on Smith’s hip. Smith was then taken out of the vehicle. While he was being removed from the vehicle, a struggle ensued as he was being detained. Smith then ran. 

“As he ran, Smith pulled his handgun out with his right hand, which resulted in the officer-involved shooting,” Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Edward Igoe said in the video.

Deputies immediately began providing medical aid before he was taken to a local hospital, where law enforcement said he ultimately survived his injuries. He was later booked into the Sacramento County main jail. 

The sheriff’s office said a firearm belonging to the driver was found at the scene. 

Neither deputy was injured. The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation. 

The investigation is ongoing.
