San Jose State University’s football team ended its second week of training camp at CEFCU Stadium on Saturday, and first-year Spartans defensive coordinator Bojay Filimoeatu had high praise for several players, including Caleb Womack.
Womack, a redshirt senior cornerback who was named a Mountain West Conference (MWC) Scholar-Athlete each of the past three years, is poised to see an increase in action this season.
“A big star in the back end is Womack,” Filimoeatu said. “Womack has stepped up. You know, he’s always gonna play like it’s the last play of his career. He has that standard, whatever he’s doing, whether it’s special teams, defense … He has been a rockstar.”
Spartans head coach Ken Niumatalolo said he likes he’s seeing from from his cornerbacks as they continue to fight for playing time.
Womack (5-fooot-10, 180 pounds) is one of nine players listed on SJSU’s roster at cornerback. The others include redshirt senior Kejuan Bullard, Jr., senior Runye Norton; juniors Francois Jones, Jr., and Jayden Robertson; redshirt sophomores Greco Carrillo, Isaiah Buxton and Jonathan Watts; and freshman Cole Gholar.
Buxton previously attended San Diego State University, and Watts was at Idaho State before joining the Spartans last season. Norton, Jones, and Robertson are former JUCO players.
“There’s a lot of depth back there,” Niumatalolo said.
Womack has played in 23 games over the past two seasons, primarily on special teams. He made seven tackles for the Spartans (3-9 overall, 2-6 MWC) last season, including six solo stops.
The Spartans open their season against USC at L.A. Memorial Coliseum on Aug. 29 at noon. The game will be televised on NBC Sports.
