La Superior Mercados on Stockton Boulevard is closed until further notice after a ‘suspicious’ fire on August 7th.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento neighborhood is without a popular grocery store after a fire damaged La Superior Mercados on Stockton Boulevard and 21st Avenue.

Crime tape remained around the store Sunday, two days after firefighters responded to the fire. According to the Sacramento Fire Department, there were signs of forced entry at the scene when crews arrived.

51-year-old David Mora was arrested and is being held in the Sacramento County Jail on charges of felony burglary and arson in connection to the fire. There were no reported injuries.

La Superior Mercados posted a message on social media thanking the community for its support and patience as the store recovers from the incident. In a statement to ABC10, the store said they will be closed until further notice.

Shoppers said the closure is a major setback because they rely on the market for affordable and convenient food. Robert Maktenieks, who lives close to the store, said he plans to shop at another La Superior Mercados location to keep supporting the business.

“We used to go to La Superior off Franklin. Not only have I continued to go there, but especially after hearing this, I’ll probably still resort to going to that one,” Maktenieks said.

Shoppers say the market is affordable, convenient and known for its $1.50 Taco Tuesday deals. Now, they say they have to travel farther and potentially spend more money to shop there.

“We don’t drive, so we gotta walk. We live all the way in the back, and it’s hot,” Isabelle Evans, who lives at an apartment complex across from the store, said. 

Mora is being held on a $75,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.

“We are deeply grateful for the incredible support over the years from our community,” La Superior Mercados said in the statement. “Our biggest concern and priority are our employees and their well-being.”
