Construction worker thrown from Sacramento Highway 50 overpass in deadly suspected DUI crash, CHP says
SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
A driver suspected of driving under the influence was taken into custody after a deadly crash that sent a construction crew member off a Sacramento Highway 50 overpass, officials said Monday.
Lt. Kris Rolin, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol South Sacramento division, said a driver was headed eastbound Highway 50 around 12:30 a.m. when the driver realized there was construction and swerved to the right.
The driver slammed into a vehicle where, inside, was a construction crew contracted by Caltrans, working on the Fix50 project, Rolin said. The impact of the crash sent a crew member who was outside the vehicle flying off the overpass and onto Stockton Boulevard below.
Rolin said that crew member died, and two others inside the vehicle were taken to the hospital. Their conditions are not known.
After the crash, Rolin said the driver kept going and hit another vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle pursued the first driver and called CHP until officers caught up near Highway 50 and 65th Street and arrested the first driver.
Rolin said the driver who crashed into the crew members’ vehicle will likely face hit-and-run and suspected DUI charges.
Investigators were at the scene for hours, blocking Highway 50 and the eastbound onramp from Stockton Boulevard, but the roads have since reopened.
