San Marcos is getting its first Trader Joe’s.

The grocery store is heading to North City, a new development that mixes residential, retail, restaurants and wellness offerings, the developer, Sea Breeze Properties, announced Monday.

“Every great neighborhood needs a great grocery store, and Trader Joe’s is a natural fit for North City,” Darren Levitt, a principal of Sea Breeze, said in a news release. “We’ve been very intentional about creating public spaces that bring together the things that make everyday life better, good food, wellness, art, culture, parks and community.”

North City, a $1 billion master-planned, mixed-use development of almost 200-acres that opened to residents in December, offers “a different way of living,” according to its website. Among the special touches: 40-year-old olive trees, public art and a planned 2-acre park. A marketing brochure says it is meant to serve as both an extension of the California State University San Marcos campus and as the city’s “new downtown.”

Trader Joe’s joins Buona Forchetta, Christophe Rull Patisserie, J. Brix Wines, Draft Republic, Mesa Rim and a weekly farmer’s market. Along with Trader Joe’s, some of the community’s other new tenants include Haggo’s Organic Taco, a pilates studio and Padel N9NE, a sports club.

The community’s 222 North City apartment complex — and the county’s largest as of last December, at 458 units — is now half-leased, the company said. Safdie Rabines Architects designed the masterplan.

“North City has always been about more than a collection of buildings,” Levitt said. “It’s about creating a place where people want to spend time, connect with each other and feel part of something. Trader Joe’s, local businesses, public spaces and community programming are all part of that vision.”

This San Marcos location is the third new Trader Joe’s announced in recent months for San Diego County. Others are coming to 1590 Leucadia Blvd., in the Forum Carlsbad shopping center in Encinitas, and at 3962 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. in San Diego’s Clairemont Town Square. Including the newcomers, the chain has around 20 stores in San Diego County.
