San Francisco’s requirement for sprinklers in older high-rise residential buildings could cost some homeowners as much as nearly $250,000 per unit, according to a new city analysis.
NBC Bay Area reported that the 2022 fire code update applies to 126 buildings constructed before the 1970s that are more than about 12 stories tall, affecting roughly 9,000 residences.
Residents and building owners say some structures lack sufficient space in walls and ceilings for sprinkler piping, as well as the electrical capacity and space needed for pumping equipment.
The deadline to obtain permits to upgrade sprinklers has been delayed five years. A technical advisory council including city officials, residents, firefighters, and builders is expected to begin reviewing implementation of the mandate next month.
