Lids, the sportswear retailer that sells hats for pretty much every major-league sports team, is opening at 50 Powell St. in Union Square, according to building permits.
The company, which has locations at malls across the U.S., offers a variety of flat-bills, snapbacks, and trucker caps, along with jerseys.
Lids had a small location just up the street at 167 Powell that closed in 2023 as retailers were fleeing Union Square. Its return signals a renewed trust in the area’s retail potential, boosters say.
“Everybody’s coming back. Everyone that did leave is now looking to come back,” said Colliers broker Julie Taylor, noting that it’s been a busy summer for leasing in Union Square.
