BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Jeff Don Ferguson, an admitted methamphetamine user for the past 30 years, doesn’t have a valid driver’s license. It’s suspended, as has been the case off and on for years for incidents of driving under the influence of drugs, according to a court filing.
So Ferguson never should have gotten behind the wheel the night of July 18, when he allegedly hit and killed a 17-year-old girl in the 3400 block of Union Avenue.
Police say Ferguson, 67, admitted to stopping after the crash and checking his vehicle for damage, then parking at a nearby location and leaving. He returned later and hid the vehicle at his home in Oildale, according to the filing.
The teen, Love Icelyn Dixon, was pronounced dead at Kern Medical.
Flock cameras helped detectives identify the vehicle and search warrants were obtained to search it and Ferguson’s home on Central Avenue, according to Bakersfield Police Department. Police say the vehicle had damage consistent with the crash.
Ferguson, who also had a warrant in a separate case, was arrested Aug. 5 and charged with hit-and-run causing death and misdemeanor counts of driving on a license suspended or revoked for DUI and driving while addicted to a drug.
