(FOX40.COM) — A bridge was shut down after a homeless encampment fire began to spread to its structure Wednesday, fire officials said.
At about 8 a.m., the Sacramento Fire Department responded to the San Juan Bridge at Northgate Boulevard and Mable Street in north Sacramento to investigate reports of smoke, the Sacramento Fire Department said.
Crews arrived on the scene to find that a fire that started in a homeless encampment had spread to the structure of the bridge.
After extinguishing the encampment’s fire, firefighters entered through a manhole to check for any additional flames. They found smoldering debris and more fire, which crews extinguished.
The entire bridge is closed in both directions until city officials can inspect its integrity and ensure it’s safe for vehicles to drive on, fire officials said.
