The massive Bug Fire, burning in the high desert north of Reno, crossed back into California and prompted evacuations in Lassen County.
The fire had burned 88,421 acres (138 square miles) as of Thursday morning, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. The evacuation area for Bug and the nearby Stallion Fire covered 700 square miles.
Stallion, which started Monday, had burned 40,689 acres (63 square miles) near the south end of Pyramid Lake.
The map above shows the evacuation area in red and the approximate fire perimeters in black.
Bug, which began in California on Saturday, Aug. 8, had been burning principally to the north and east since crossing into Nevada, but on Wednesday evening increased activity on its northwest quadrant sent it back into California.
On Tuesday, Bug’s perimeter had merged with that of the Fred Mtn Fire; the combined fire was designated Bug.
