The Union-Tribune is previewing San Diego’s high school football teams ahead of the Aug. 20 season opener.

We continue with a look at the Coastal Conference:

Army-Navy Academy

Last season: 9-2

Coach: Nehemiah Brunson, 12th season

Key players: Jacob Eastley (Ath), Vincent Leatherman (RB-DB), Kymani Tuitasi (OL-DL), Lino Ripley (OL-DL), Ryder Routh (WR), Lucas Pilcher (OL-DL), Ryke Broxson (DB).

Scouting report: The Warriors are looking to rebuild after a 9-2 season and a deep run in the Division 3 playoffs. With a high school enrollment of just 170 boys, there are some building blocks. Leatherman ran for 637 yards and 10 TDs last year. Eastley is a two-way starter, rushing for 238 yards and intercepting four passes. Ripley, a sophomore, had 25 tackles and has help on the OL and DL from Tuitasi, a senior who checks in at 290 pounds. Routh is another two-way player with 10 catches and 25 tackles. Broxson had 19 tackles as a deep defender.

Bishop’s

Last season: 8-4

Coach: Shane Walton, seventh season

Key players: Dane Larson (WR-DB), Nick Pfister (WR-DB), Ryan O’Donovan (OL-DL), Jackson Binn (QB), Reid Dielman (TE-LB), Jojo Bryant (RB), Amaree Maye (WR-DB).

Scouting report: The Knights return much of the defense and key positions on offense. Larson had 60 catches for 1,213 yards and 13 TDs. He’s committed to play at Brown. Pfister, who had 31 catches and 32 tackles, has also drawn interest from Ivy League schools. O’Donovan, a four-year starter, is the big man on both lines. Dielman, who had 45 tackles and 4 1/2 sacks as a sophomore, moves from defensive end to middle linebacker. The key will be at QB, where Binn, a three-sport player, takes over.

La Jolla Country Day

Last season: 6-7

Coach: Carmy Cesaire, first season

Key players: Marvin Jones III (WR-QB-LB), Keenan Ward (RB-DE), Nathan Taccone (WR), Will Bertrand (QB), Maddox Bass-Sulpizio (WR-DL), Leo Grassi (OL-DL), Teddy Irvin (OL), Sebastian Rock (OL), Porter Brunson (OL-DL), Owen Dorros (WR), Riley Davis-Reagan (LB-DB), Caden Bessler (LB).

Scouting report: Ceasaire, a longtime assistant, inherits 15 returning starters, but says depth will be the key to success. Bertrand steps in at QB. Jones was a force on offense, putting up 440 yards, and had 91 tackles as a defender. Ward rushed for 1,103 yards, had 47 tackles and blocked a pair of field goals. The offensive line returns four starters, led by Grassi and guard Irvin. Grassi is also a top defensive lineman with 43 tackles; he’s joined up front by Davis-Reagan, who had 55 tackles; Brunson, who had 23 tackles; and Bessler.

Santa Fe Christian

Last season: 13-1

Coach: Jon Wallace, 14th season

Key players: Dax Labrum (QB), Chase Woolley (Ath), Brady Berg (RB-DB), Cruze Campbell (WR), Sean Littler (OL), Dylan Tochterman (OL), Quinn Nickkel (QB), Brody Stuart (RB), Josh Wilson (LB), Eion Scott (LB).

Scouting report: School record-holder Labrum is the leader, throwing for 3,106 yards and 36 TDs last year. He has committed to Cornell. Woolley and Campbell are his two top targets. Berg is a two-way starter. Campbell and Tochterman are considered college recruits. Three offensive linemen return, and Nickkel is a top-flight longsnapper. Hamric transfers in from St. Augustine. Wilson and Scott are rising stars at linebacker.

Pacific League
Classical Academy

Last season: 2-8

Coach: Josiah Cruz, sixth season

Key players: Daine Gonzalez (RB-LB), Nick Mizel (WR-RB), Ethan Paulson (WR-DB), Ethan Bolen (RB-DB), Jake Tenter (OL-DL), Carter Beeson (QB-RB-DL).

Scouting report: Classical will focus on controlling the game with the run and flying to the ball on defense. Gonzalez is the top returning rusher after putting up 432 yards last year. He had 73 tackles on defense. Mizel, Paulson, Bolen and Tenter will all be asked to go both ways. The nonleague schedule is a tough one, with Valley Center, San Pasqual, Escondido and Coronado on Classical’s schedule in the first month.

Coastal Academy

Last season: 9-2

Coach: Stephen Patton, sixth season

Key players: Cody Terpstra (QB, DB), Michael Klein (DB-LB), Moses Gilmour (RB-LB), Levi Dutton (OL-DL).

Scouting report: A strong senior class led to nine wins last season. Now those players need to be replaced. Terpstra is the QB. Klein is the leader of the defense, along with Gilmour. Dutton, a sophomore, is the most experienced lineman.

Escondido Charter

Last season: 3-7

Coach: Erick Morales, first season

Key players: Jake Scates (QB-LB), Blake Burges (Ath), Jordan Tyler (OL-DL), Jon Perna (TE-LB), Sam Hinrichs (Ath), Tyler Heaton (LB), Brian Owens (Ath), Gabe Marsh (OL-DL).

Scouting report: There is a nice corps of 11 starters returning. Scates, who had 124 tackles last season, is the leader of the defense. Hinrichs added 71 tackle. Burges, Owens, Heaton and Perna were major defensive contributors. Tyler and Marsh anchor the line. Morales, who was the head coach at La Puente High School for two seasons, takes over for veteran coach Jon Goodman.

Maranatha Christian

Last season: 12-1

Coach: Nick Novak, sixth season

Key players: Cody Baltagalvis (P), Harrison Boehning (WR-LB), Sawyer Bryant (WR-LB-PK), Holton Heinrichs (FB-LB), Dane Johnson (WR-DB), Caleb Kennedy (WR-DB), Cole Niguidula (WR-DB), Aidem Sarazin(OL-DL), Daniel Schaffer (OL-DE), Wyatt Faber (TE-DE), Kason Lozano (RB-LB), Ryan Niguidula (RB-DB), Jack Ralston (OL-LB), Collin Leonard (QB), Tom Peddinghaus (QB-LB-PK), Gavin Baer (WR-LB), Carter Moffett (WR-DB).

Scouting report: Maranatha averaged 40 points a game last season. The returning Leonard and Peddinghaus, a transfer from San Pasqual, figure to fight it out at the QB spot. Bryant and Johnson are the main receivers;  Bryant might be the best all-around player on the team with 38 receptions, 31 PATs and a pair of field goals a year ago. Ryan Niguidula had 1,080 all-purpose yards on offense. Boehning had 53 tackles, Ralston had 42, Heinrichs 41 and Faber 35.

Sunset League
Foothills Christian

Last season: 1-9

Coach: Dustin Turley, second season

Key players: Jonah Nottoli (RB-DB), David Stewart (RB), Jace Hilemon (WR), Tuchon Phoenix (RB), Marshall Bailey (DT), Trevor Embleton (RB-DB), Hayden Oleson (QB).

Scouting report: Last year’s team threw for 553 yards and ran for 1,660.That may change now that Hayden Oleson and his brother Jack have transferred in from Canada. Hayden is a junior QB. Phoenix, Stewart and Embleton will carry the load at running back.

O’Farrell Charter

Last season: 4-7

Coach: Corey Miller-Thompson, first season

Key players: Dakobi Coleman (QB-DB), Oscar Jones (WR-DB), Angelo Ortegon (RB-LB), Emmanuel Garcia (DL), Victor Grubbs (DL).

Scouting report: O’Farrell made big strides in its first two seasons; Miller-Thompson, a new coach who comes over from Lincoln, hopes to keep moving it forward. Coleman passed for 1,043 yards and ran for 721 last year. Jones caught 12 passes, with half of them going for TDs. Ortegon rushed for 280 yards. Garcia played in just three games,  but had 21 tackles. Grubbs is a freshman with a bright future.

Orange Glen

Last season: 1-8

Coach: Neil  Bonahoom Jr., first season

Key players: Axel Aguilar (OL-LB), Jesiah Durley (RB-DB), Andres Rivas (OL-DL), Richie Martin (OL-DL).

Scouting report: The Patriots are 2-38 over the last four seasons and do not have enough players to field a JV or freshman team this year. Bonahoom will build around four key players in his first season. Martin is a junior center who can hold the offense together. Rivas is a two-way lineman with a high motor. Durley and Aguliar are athletic juniors.

Tri-City Christian

Last season: 0-9

Coach: Salo Faraimo, second season

Key players: Caleb Williams (WR-DB), Donovan Cronkite (QB), Noah Haber (RB-DB), Carter Williams (RB-LB), Brooks Griffin (OL-DL).

Scouting report: Cronkite finished last season strong at QB. Caleb Williams is a playmaker on both sides of the ball. Haber and Carter Williams had excellent summers. Griffin, a sophomore, has shown dramatic improvement.

Victory Christian Academy

Last season: 5-6

Coach: Earl Benson, 10th season

Key players: Michael Aguirre (WR-DB), Kyle Capili (WR-DB), Theodore Cordova (TE-DE), Nathan Garcia (OL-DL), Ricardo Elenes (OL-DL), Calvin Schmitt (PK-DB), Isaiah Gerdes (OL-DL).

Scouting report: This will be a rebuilding season. Capili had 52 tackles as a junior, and Garcia had 43 tackles and six sacks as a sophomore. Cordova had 15 tackles, Schmitt had 12 tackles and Gerdes 10. The offense will be a work in progress.

JOHN MAFFEI
