Fresno County is going to blows with California over a special statute passed by the state legislature to ensure a county tax initiative will appear on the November ballot.

The measure, which received the necessary signatures to go in front of county voters, proposes a half-cent sales tax to replace an expiring levy for funding transportation infrastructure. After the county board authorized a study pushing the measure beyond the November ballot’s approval deadline, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed AB 1923 to place the initiative on the ballot.
