BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Bakersfield Police Department’s Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI and Driver License Checkpoint on Friday.
Officers conducting the checkpoint operation will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment of drivers, BPD said.
The department said that conducting DUI checkpoint operations is a proven way to reduce the number of people killed or injured from drug and alcohol related crashes.
“Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by 20% when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely,” law enforcement said.
The operation will be conducted throughout the city at undisclosed locations on Friday, August 14, from 6:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.
BPD said the checkpointed will be placed at locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests. By doing this, the department said it “affords the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence.”
“Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public,” BPD said. “Drivers caught while driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, and other expenses that could exceed $10,000.”
Funding for the checkpoint programs is provided to BPD through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
