What’s better than a freshly baked cookie? A bigger freshly baked cookie, of course.

From the overwhelming selection of oversized cookies at the recently reopened Earl of Sandwich at Downtown Disney to the enormous, pink-boxed Crumbl Cookies, giant cookies seem to take the cake these days.

Orange County will get another option when when Levain Bakery opens at Fashion Island in September.

Known for massive 6-ounce cookies, Levain Bakery was founded in New York City in 1995 by best friends Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald.

The specialty shop introduced cookies after the founders began training for triathlons and started baking the ultra-thick creations as a post-race treat.

The confection became Levain Bakery’s claim to fame, and the company now operates 19 U.S. locations, including three in Southern California. The Newport Beach store will be O.C.’s first.

“We have always felt that Levain brings people together, and our L.A. bakeries have shown us that Southern California agrees,” Weekes and McDonald said in a joint statement. “Levain in Newport Beach feels like the next natural step, and we can’t wait to open our doors at Fashion Island.”

The menu at the bakery near Macy’s will feature the signature cookies in original flavors like chocolate chip walnut, dark chocolate chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin and dark chocolate peanut butter chip.

Guests will additionally find artisan breads, sandwiches, muffins and other pastries. There’s also coffee-based beverages, including cappuccinos, cold-foam drinks and a cookie milk latte, as well as matcha tea.

Levain isn’t the first New York-based cafe at Fashion Island. Earlier this year, hundreds of Ralph Lauren fans lined up for the opening of Ralph’s Coffee.

Levain Bakery will open at 315 Newport Center Drive in Newport Beach in September. For menu and details, go to levainbakery.com.
