Re “Head Start deregulation moves forward” (Aug. 8): So the government is proposing cutting services to young children to save money by deregulating Head Start. Increasing adult to child ratios so they serve more children, decreasing services like medical and dental screenings, and lowering standards for teachers and curriculum are among some of the hundreds of proposed changes to federal regulations.
All of this will reduce the quality of the program at the expense of vulnerable children during their period of greatest brain growth.
This administration has its priorities seriously out of whack and its policies don’t align. It wants more babies but also cuts in SNAP, health care and now Head Start. How will parents work so they can get SNAP benefits if they don’t have Head Start? Pregnant women need prenatal care, but Medicaid and the ACA have been cut. As a decades-long educator of young children, I am appalled that this is even a consideration!
