The San Diego Wave continued their struggles at home with a 1-1 draw against the expansion Denver Summit on Friday night.

San Diego coach Jonas Eidevall has been vocal about his team needing to play the same way at home as it does on the road, especially when it comes to finishing opportunities.

That was once again an issue on Friday night. The Wave (10-7-3) had five shots on goal and multiple 1-on-1opportunities but came away with only one goal.

In the 26th minute, Gia Corley sent a nice pass to Ludmila that left her 1-on-1 with goalkeeper Abby Smith. The Wave forward made her move on Smith and fired a shot, but it went wide to the right.

In the 35th minute, Corley found Melanie Barcenas in a tight window. She began drifting toward the middle at the top of the box and showed off some brilliant dribbling that had midfielder Devin Lynch twisting and turning. Barcenas got the ball onto her left foot and fired from distance for the opening goal of the match, giving the Wave a 1-0 lead.

In their last home game, San Diego struggled to defend deep passes into the box, and it happened again on Friday night.

In the 58th minute, Denver’s Janine Sonis sent a deep cross into the box that Yazmeen Ryan finished with a header to tie the match at 1-1. Ryan showed some good movement in the box to get in front of Perle Morroni to have a chance for the equalizer.

A minute later, Barcenas nearly scored another screamer. On the right side of the field, she danced around her defender, moved to her right and fired a shot that hit the top of the crossbar. It initially drew excitement before the fans groaned when they realized it had stayed out of the net.

In the 70th minute, a through ball was sent to Adriana Leon, who found herself 1-on-1 with Smith. Leon put the ball into the back of the net for what appeared to be a 2-1 lead. While she celebrated with her teammates, the assistant referee had his flag raised for offside, which brought a rain of boos from the crowd. The goal was disallowed.

Eidevall spoke earlier in the week about the team needing to take advantage of this three-game home stand and earn positive results. The Wave came away with one point on Friday and now have two more opportunities to earn their first home win since July 4. Denver is 6-7-6 in its first year in the NWSL.

The Wave will return to Snapdragon Stadium next Friday to take on the Utah Royals.
