Bruce Green loves Encinitas, surfing and the community he has built in this pocket of San Diego. But beyond being a longtime North County resident, Green has dedicated a great deal of his professional career and energy to his work as a cinematographer.
Now, after 45 years, he has received his 8th national Emmy nomination, adding to the list of his existing four Emmy wins for Outstanding Achievement in Camera Work and Technical Direction.
Green has made a career behind the camera, running programs of all calibers, from Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Film to Elton John Live at Dodger Stadium and many more. All the while, he has had his roots planted in Encinitas.
“I grew up in Northern California and moved down here and graduated with a Radio Television degree from SDSU Film and Television School. I went out into the world with nearly zero connections but slowly began working on various shows in news and sports,” said Green.
In 1986, Green worked on the Calgary Winter Olympics, launching his early career in televised sports, a field he stayed in for many years.
“In 1988 I moved back down to Encinitas. I got a call to go out and do camera and video work for bands that were touring,” Green said.
And thus launched Green’s next career venture.
“I started working for all kinds of rock and roll tour bands. I made a career of that for almost 17 years, and that was really where I got my experience filming and shooting music. I toured around the world with bands like the Rolling Stones, ACDC, Van Halen Jimmy Buffett, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and more. That morphed into concert-style films and live TV specials,” said Green.
Working across a vast range of talent, Green’s work changes greatly project to project, but sports, music and live entertainment have always been his niches.
“I have worked seasons of The Voice, America’s Got Talent, The Masked Singer, Shark Tank and a lot of game shows. I also have done a ton of award shows, like the Oscars, People’s Choice Awards, SAG Awards, Comedy Central Roasts and more,” said Green.
Some of Green’s biggest and most lengthy projects have been his work on live concert films.
“I do a lot of big concert films. I shot Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, Lady Gaga’s special at Dodger Stadium, BTS which is a big K-Pop band,” said Green.
Along the way, Green has picked up several Emmys and been nominated for numerous more.
“I won an Emmy for an A&E concert special, one for Sting, another for Adele One Night Only Tour, another for the Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade. I have one Daytime Emmy as well. The latest one I won was the Elton John Live Farewell from Dodgers,” Green said.
This next Emmy nomination is for Green’s work on Dancing with the Stars.
“I will be attending the award show September 6 and hope to bring home my fourth Primetime Emmy,” Green said.
For Green and others in his field, Emmys are not all too uncommon but, none-the-less, the experience is massively rewarding.
“It is so good to see the recognition,” said Green.
Watching his hard work payoff is what makes nominations like the Dancing with the Stars one so special.
“I’ve been fortunate to have a 40-plus-year career in the television industry doing something I love,” said Green.
Another rewarding aspect to his work is the ability to live where and how he truly wants.
“It’s taken me all over the world and allowed me to live the lifestyle I want right here in Cardiff,” said Green.
Looking ahead, Green plans to work until retirement, creating and collaborating with people and projects that inspire him.
“I’ve achieved the highest honors in entertainment and I get to work with the most talented people there are. There have been many years between awards yet every job I strive for excellence, meet new people, have fun, be creative and entertain audiences. It’s been a great ride so far,” said Green.
