JX Matsuri is a tribute to the Nisei Week Carnival, a popular community event in the 1970s.
JX Matsuri, a community carnival presented by Japan Crossover (JX), will take place on Sunday, Aug. 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Weller Court, 123 Astronaut Elllison S. Onizuka St. in Little Tokyo, during Nisei Week.
JX is the Entertainment Subcommittee of the L.A. Next Generation Japanese American Leaders Initiative in partnership with the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles. From honoring the Little Tokyo Community Impact Fund and Japangeles with its JX Impact Awards, to building bridges between Japan and Los Angeles, JX is dedicated to connecting forward-thinking leaders across the U.S. and Japan through arts, culture, technology, and entertainment.
Through curated experiences and cross-cultural collaborations, JX aims to build community, strengthen U.S.-Japan partnerships, and elevate Japanese diasporic culture globally.
JX’s mission is to revive the spirit of the Nisei Week Carnival by bridging generations and community organizations together in Little Tokyo. On Aug. 16, JX will activate Weller Court with community org booths, games, Little Tokyo Table Tennis ping pong, and music right along the Nisei Week Grand Parade route. Free to the public.
“We hope that in honoring the past we can make new memories of Little Tokyo in your heart for the future,” organizers said. “We hope that this is the start of a new tradition by being the change we want to see in the world, even if it’s just little by Little Tokyo.”
