Ravens rule

Since the Open Division was created in 2014, either Canyon Crest Academy or Torrey Pines has won every title, with the Ravens claiming seven of the last eight championships. Expect CCA’s dominance to continue.

“On paper, we look very good,” said coach Kevin Brown. “We don’t have dominant singles players, but we’re super deep.”

Chemistry a key

Talent, and lots of it, is the main reason for CCA’s long run. But senior Isabelle Hsu, who teamed with junior Minerva Toda to win the doubles title last year, cites another factor.

“I think our environment is very welcoming,” said Hsu. “I know a lot of other tennis programs are kind of toxic, especially those in Los Angeles. Our team is very connected. There’s not cliques. We’re very welcoming.”

On to singles

While Hsu will likely try to add another doubles title, Toda is switching to singles.

“I guess there’s nothing more to reach in doubles,” Toda said.

Focusing on college 

Reigning singles champion Chloe Katz, a La Costa Canyon High junior, is passing on playing high school tennis this season to focus on her college recruitment.
