ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — An Atlanta police officer was shot Monday morning.
It happened at a home along the 1400 block of Clark Howard Lane near Lee Street in the Oakland City neighborhood around 8:40 a.m.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said they were responding to a mental health call, adding they have been to this particular home multiple times.
When officers arrived, they were shot upon. A 30-year-old police officer, who has been on the force since 2019, was shot in the arm. He is expected to be OK.
The suspect, 24-year-old Michael Gates, was taken into custody. No one else was hurt.
Gov. Brian Kemp took to social media asking for prayers for the officer.
“We are grateful for his bravery and that of all our law enforcement across the state as they answer the call of duty and put themselves in harm’s way to protect others,” Kemp wrote.
Several ramps on I-20 were blocked to traffic as the officer was being transported to Grady Hospital at around 9:15 a.m.
