Gig driver union could be certified in less than 30 days

LOS ANGELES — California gig workers cleared a historic milestone last week.

Uber and Lyft drivers celebrated the formation of what they said will be the biggest ride-hailing driver union in the world.

California is the second state to allow ride-hailing drivers to unionize after Massachusetts.

The newly formed California Gig Workers Union represents around 350,000 rideshare drivers statewide, according to the union. Drivers cleared the first major hurdle, reaching the required 30% of active driver support to create the union.

Now, a 30-day waiting period must pass before the union can be formally certified.
