A Mexican restaurant in Clovis known for its red tacos and quesatacos is opening a location in Fresno.

The 559 Taqueria plans to open a restaurant at the northwest corner of Bullard and Marks avenues in Fresno.

It’s taking over the space El Mariachi left behind when it closed in March and reopened at Bullard and Palm as Masa Madre.

The new 559 Taqueria Cantina y Cocina is expected to open in about three or four months.

It will be much more than a standard Fresno taqueria, said owner Chris Garcia.

It’s a Mexican cantina with a full bar.

A mock-up shows a large image of La Catrina, the feminine skull often associated with Dia de Los Muertos, that will hang over the bar.

The bar will serve beer, wine and cocktails, including margaritas.

The work — complete with arches — is almost finished. The rest of the restaurant has been remodeled too.

“Everything will be literally brand new in there,” Garcia said. “We gutted the whole place — everything. Brand new floors, ceiling, bathrooms, kitchen, full bar.”

Garcia owns the existing 559 Taqueria at 1320 Clovis Ave.

The menu

The new Fresno location will serve the red tacos and quesatacos that people lined up for at the business’ first taco truck called 559 Street Tacos.

The red taco is made by dipping tortillas into a sauce made from long-simmered chiles, then slapping them on the grill with your choice of meat — though barbacoa is a common choice.

The quesatacos are the No. 1 seller. They’re also dipped in the red sauce, filled with meat and cheese, folded over and cooked until a little bit crispy.

The birria, made from shredded beef, is also a customer favorite.

“The birria is what a lot people come for,” he said.

All of those items come to the new location, along with a much broader menu, including enchiladas and fajitas.

Garcia plans to take some of the lessons learned at the Clovis location and bring them to Fresno.

For instance, both restaurants will offer quick-service ordering and the sit-down full-service dining.

“I did notice people really like the full-service concept, so we’re going to incorporate that,” he said.

The business got its start years ago with two taco trucks. Those have since been sold.

There was another brick-and-mortar restaurant for a while at Cedar and Shepherd avenues, but that closed.
