Surf City locks in decades-long beach protection plan

  • August 18, 2026

SURF CITY, N.C. (WECT) – Surf City town leaders signed a partnership agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, locking in what officials call a milestone moment for the town’s coastal storm risk management project.

Leaders say the agreement will help keep Surf City’s shoreline safe for years.

Mayor Teresa Batts said the agreement protects the town’s oceanfront homes, infrastructure and businesses.

“For the town of Surf City, it is a massive protection of our oceanfront homes,” Batts said. “It is a massive protection of infrastructure, of homeowners, of businesses, of tourism, for the great state of North Carolina that come here year after year. That is what today is about.”

Town leaders say that with the Aug. 17 signing, engineers will return every six years for the next half-century to renourish the beach.
