A 20-year-old Long Beach man was killed after being shot while driving and crashing into a utility pole, authorities announced Monday.
The shooting was reported at about 7:28 p.m. Aug. 14 near 12th Street and Lewis Avenue, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
Responding officers found the victim, later identified as Long Beach resident Cori Michael Scales, suffering from a gunshot wound.
A preliminary investigation determined that Scales was driving when he was shot and subsequently crashed into a Southern California Edison utility pole, police said.
Officers provided lifesaving measures until personnel from the Long Beach Fire Department arrived. Scales was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

He died from his injuries on Aug. 16, authorities said.
The person or people responsible for the shooting fled before officers arrived, and police did not release a suspect description.
Homicide detectives responded to the scene and are working to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
Investigators believe additional witnesses may have seen events before or after the gunfire.
