Twin Rivers Unified welcomes 25,000 students back to school with new superintendent
NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. —
Thousands of students across Twin Rivers Unified School District returned to class on Tuesday morning, marking the start of a new school year and a new chapter for the district under its new superintendent.
Twin Rivers Unified serves about 25,000 students at 49 school sites across northern Sacramento County.
At Oakdale Elementary School in North Highlands, new Superintendent Dr. Tu Moua Carroz welcomed students and families as they arrived for the first day of school.
Carroz is breaking barriers as she takes on the district’s top leadership role. A Hmong refugee, she has shared how her own childhood experiences helped shape her commitment to education.
As a child, Carroz rode the bus for about an hour and 20 minutes each way to attend school while her parents worked in strawberry fields.
Her story carries special meaning in Twin Rivers Unified, one of the region’s most diverse school districts. Families across the district speak more than 50 different languages, and many students are English learners.
Carroz spent the first day visiting six schools across the district, meeting students, families, and staff. She will wrap up her first-day tour at Grant Union High School.
District leaders say the new school year is an opportunity to make sure students feel welcomed, supported, and inspired to believe they can achieve their goals.
Twin Rivers Unified serves communities across an 82-square-mile area of Sacramento County, including North Highlands, North Sacramento, Rio Linda, Del Paso Heights, Foothill Farms, Natomas and surrounding neighborhoods.
