WASHINGTON (TNND) — The California Energy Commission earlier this week approved rules that will not allow the sale of replacement car tires if they don’t meet the state’s efficiency standards.
These new rules could eliminate 70% of the tires drivers in the state can use, according to the New York Post.
According to the new rules, tires have to meet a standard for “rolling resistance” meaning it will measured how much energy it takes to roll a tire.
The Post reports that the lower resistance increases gas mileage or decreases energy.
Former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt weighed in on the matter, calling the whole thing a scam.
“They deliberately make your gas prices more expensive, to compel you to stop driving,” he wrote in a lengthy post on X. “Then they use the artificially high cost of fuel to impose further regulations and higher tire costs on you. The whole communist schtick is a positive feedback loop. It’s the Arsonist-Firefighter Fallacy.”
He shared a video on X of a woman trying to justify the efficiency standards for tires.
“This very odd bird who is now regulating what tires you can get in CA just gave away the whole scam,” he said. “She cites high gas prices to justify it: ‘If we can bring down those costs even a little bit, why wouldn’t we do it?’ Of course, no mention of reducing CA’s self-imposed gas taxes that make our fuel costs 2X the national average.”
